Position: Executive Director, Food Systems Leadership Fellowship


Location: Flexible, Remote (North America)

Status: Exempt, Full Time 

Reports to: Fellowship Steering Committee (i.e., six members comprised of funders and community partners)

The Role

The Executive Director will lead a bold new national Fellowship program for some of the nation’s most effective leaders working at the intersection of food, agriculture, climate, public health, community development, and social justice to create a more sustainable and equitable food system. This is an extraordinary opportunity to shape the future of our nation’s food systems by attracting, strengthening, and connecting leaders who will create transformative impact. The Executive Director will be instrumental to the Fellowship’s work to fill a critical gap in the leadership development ecosystem.

About the Food Systems Leadership Fellowship

This initiative is a national Fellowship to strengthen the capacity of key leaders, their organizations, and their networks to shift cultural norms and build the power needed to foster a more equitable and sustainable food system nationwide. The Fellowship will provide a space for trusted relationships to form across diverse sectors and strategic approaches to catalyze food systems change toward greater equity, stronger environmental sustainability, and better health outcomes. It is designed with a strong commitment to diversity and equity, including a commitment to ensure that at least half of the cohort are people of color and half of the cohort are women, and to seek participants from diverse regional backgrounds as well as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender leaders. The initiative is inspired by former participants of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Food & Society Fellowship, which concluded in 2013 after 12 years.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks

The Executive Director will have considerable flexibility and autonomy, and must have the ability to travel to Fellowship trainings and other meetings and public events as needed. This position will be accountable for the following responsibilities and tasks with the support of a part-time assistant, and with oversight and direction from the Steering Committee:

Compensation and Benefits

Competitive salary from $85,000 to $125,000, based on experience and qualifications and commensurate with cost of living where you are located. Through the Windward Fund, this position also provides a generous benefits and vacation package.
