Since its launch in 2015, the Windward Fund has quickly become one of the leading vehicles to fund water, climate resilience, and conservation work in the United States. Below are some examples of Windward’s work.

RESILIENT FOUNDATION

RESILIENT FOUNDATION

Unearthing untold stories

Resilient is a non-profit raising critical funding to tell stories that inspire, bring us together, and drive collective action. Resilient believes that storytelling is a catalyst for major systems change. Together with a growing network of partners and filmmakers, Resilient reaches previously unengaged audiences who can pressure decision makers from below. Resilient approaches this mission by funding atomic stories that drive impact through compelling narratives and campaigns; and leading industry innovation through pioneering special projects that go beyond films. Through close ties with WaterBear, Resilient is able to effectively distribute films and reach audiences worldwide. Rewiring America

Rewiring America

Electrifying everything to combat climate change

Rewiring America is working to address the climate crisis by electrifying everything, starting with all 121 million households across the country. It envisions a world in which electrification is simple, measurable, and inevitable—one that enables us to achieve national emissions goals, improve health, lower monthly bills, and create millions of jobs in the clean energy sector. To make the transition from fossil fuels to electrification more accessible, Rewiring America works to mobilize policymakers toward energy independence, while providing comprehensive resources to support consumers, and laying the groundwork for a mainstream national movement for electrification. Windward helped to launch the project and provides ongoing full hosting services, including contract and grants management, financial accounting, compliance oversight, and tax reporting. Learn more.

Water Funder Initiative

Water Funder Initiative

Collaborating to advance and scale sustainable water management in the United States

The Water Funder Initiative (WFI) is a collaborative effort to identify and activate promising water solutions through strategic philanthropic investments in the United States—starting in the American West, where reliably clean water is scarce. WFI has developed a blueprint for philanthropy to advance sustainable water management at a scale never before attempted in the field. Its vision is to employ powerful, coordinated philanthropic action to shift the trajectory toward sustainable management in which: clean water supplies are available for people and nature; freshwater ecosystems are recovering; and cities, agriculture, rural communities, and industry continue to thrive by proactively managing the water supply. Windward is providing full project hosting services, including contract management, financial accounting, compliance services, and tax reporting.

The Heartland Fund

The Heartland Fund

Collaborating to strengthen civic engagement and communities across the Midwest

The Heartland Fund is a collaborative effort of cross-sector funders that aims to develop strong civic infrastructure across the Midwest. It supports locally rooted organizations and networks working to educate, organize, and mobilize stakeholders in their communities, encouraging grantee partners to address the interconnected causes of economic, environmental, and social disparities in the region. By enabling local leaders to work across a range of issues, the fund aims to: advance an equitable, inclusive, and prosperous regional economy that works for everyone; ensure that everyone has access to clean air, water, and land; and strengthen the health and resilience of Midwestern communities. The Fund to Build Grassroots Power

The Fund to Build Grassroots Power

Supporting the needs of grassroots environmental and climate justice groups in the United States

The Fund to Build Grassroots Power is a funding vehicle launched by the JPB Foundation that provides flexible support to strengthen and grow the capacity of grassroots organizations who are facing, and solving, our nation’s most pressing environmental challenges. Grassroots organizations are critical to advancing climate and environmental justice in the US. The Fund was established to help accelerate a just transition by strengthening, growing, and supporting four national networks that influence national action while providing critical infrastructure to grassroots organizations—Climate Justice Alliance, Partnership for Working Families, People’s Action, and the Environmental Justice Forum (coordinated by WE ACT for Environmental Justice). These four networks play a critical role in strengthening and connecting grassroots organizations to advance the environmental justice movement. The Fund awards grants to members and affiliates of these networks who work in their communities to advance solutions to pressing environmental challenges. The funding was made available to grow and strengthen the organizational capacity of those organizations. The Fund’s participatory governance structure is strategically guided by an advisory board of national network leaders, and the fund’s implementation is managed by an experienced grantmaking team from Arabella Advisors. Windward provides full project hosting services including contract and grants management, financial accounting, compliance oversight, and tax reporting. Learn more.
