Since its launch in 2015, the Windward Fund has quickly become one of the leading vehicles to fund water, climate resilience, and conservation work in the United States. Below are some examples of Windward’s work.

Climate Resilience Fund

Climate Resilience Fund

Facilitating strategic investments in national climate adaptation and resilience outcomes

The Climate Resilience Fund (CRF) is a collaborative grant-making enterprise that mobilizes financial resources and expertise to support climate adaptation and resilience outcomes in communities across the United States and for the natural systems on which they depend. Together with philanthropic partners, CRF aims to expand our nation’s collective capacity to create a more adaptive, sustainable, climate-resilient society. CRF is currently in the midst of a year-long development phase during which staff are making preparations to launch a regranting fund and related programming to support collaborations and catalyze leveraged investments in climate services and capacity. Windward is providing full project hosting services, including contract management, human resources support, financial accounting, compliance oversight, and tax reporting.

Water Data Initiative

Water Data Initiative

Improving water data and tech for sustainable water management

The Water Data Initiative’s purpose is to enable sustainable water management by accelerating the development of data sharing and advanced information systems. The Water Data Initiative is working with partners in Sacramento Valley to couple open, transparent data with advanced analytic and visualization tools for better real-time water operations and more sustainable water management. These tools would help water managers operate systems to better balance fishery and water supply needs. Windward is providing full project hosting services, including contract management, financial accounting, compliance oversight, and tax reporting.

The Liquid Assets Project

The Liquid Assets Project

Mobilizing impact investment capital for water sustainability

The Liquid Assets Project supports the development of impact-focused investment deals that have the potential to advance water sustainability across the American West. The project is advancing investments that provide both environmental and financial returns (Agricultural Crop Conversion and Ranchland Investment and Innovative Municipal Financing). The project is partnering with the Water Funder Initiative to generate philanthropic resources to support the development of these impact-focused deals. The Windward Fund is providing full project hosting services to the Liquid Assets Project, including contracts and grants management, compliance oversight, financial accounting, and tax reporting.

Water Funder Initiative

Water Funder Initiative

Collaborating to advance and scale sustainable water management in the United States

The Water Funder Initiative (WFI) is a collaborative effort to identify and activate promising water solutions through strategic philanthropic investments in the United States—starting in the American West, where reliably clean water is scarce. WFI has developed a blueprint for philanthropy to advance sustainable water management at a scale never before attempted in the field. Its vision is to employ powerful, coordinated philanthropic action to shift the trajectory toward sustainable management in which: clean water supplies are available for people and nature; freshwater ecosystems are recovering; and cities, agriculture, rural communities, and industry continue to thrive by proactively managing the water supply. Windward is providing full project hosting services, including contract management, financial accounting, compliance services, and tax reporting.

The Ocean Agency

The Ocean Agency

Using technology and media to creatively raise awareness about and catalyze action on ocean conservation

The Ocean Agency was founded by Richard Vevers and a team of ex-advertisers with a mission to work with global partners to catalyze ocean conservation action through creative communication and technology. The project aims to rapidly bolster existing coral reef conservation efforts globally by catalyzing new targeted action and investment in key reef geographies, focusing on identifying and protecting the reefs that are least vulnerable to climate change that also have the greatest capacity to repopulate other reefs over time. The early initiatives of The Ocean Agency have been hugely successful, as featured in the documentary Chasing Coral. The Ocean Agency has generated over $200 million worth of media coverage that has raised awareness of issues such as the crises facing coral reefs. It also conducted the most comprehensive global survey of coral reefs to date, which entailed developing camera and image recognition technology that dramatically reduces the cost of surveying. The project has collected, created, and established “virtual diving” within Google Maps and Google Street View, making the ocean accessible to all and generating billions of hits. Windward is providing full project hosting services, including contract management, human resources support, financial accounting, compliance oversight, and tax reporting.
